King Island was an unforgettable experience for me, as it was the beginning of long existing friendships and it challenged our physical and mental capabilities.

During our Adventurous Journey we undertook many activities that brought forth our strengths and weakness. These included hiking, snorkelling, surfing, team challenges, volunteer work, morning fitness and cooking each meal for two months. As a result of these activities we bonded and shared memories that we will never forget.

Sharing a house with six other girls was an amazing experience. We had our ups and downs, but in the end we became extremely close and were like sisters. Cooking provided many opportunities for laughs after the meals turned from a heavenly smell to an over-cooked disaster. Brownies were our least successful dish which often resulted in black smoke seeping out of the cracks of the oven. Subsequently we ran rapidly around the house opening as many windows as possible in fear of the smoke detector. However it was too late; the smoke detector went off alarming the rest of the campus. As a result it left a charcoal smell in the house for two weeks.

Hiking challenged our physical and mental abilities as we hiked on soft and rough terrain. During the first few days of the hike, the hiking packs took time to adapt to, leaving us with sore shoulders and hunched backs. However as we got stronger we became accustomed to our heavy oversized bags. During the evening we sat around the camp fire often laughing at the events that took place in the day. At dusk we swiftly moved about the camp site making sure containers with food were ‘possum-proof’, for at night the camp was alive with possums scavenging for food. However, some of us were unlucky as our breakfast was stolen by the devious malevolent creatures.

Volunteer work for the community of King Island was one of the most rewarding activities we engaged in. We were able to see the vast improvement we made to the landscape after cleaning up the colossal amount of plastic washed upon the eastern beaches. By working as a team we picked up a large garbage bin’s worth of rubbish. This brought forth an immense feeling of accomplishment as we looked down the once polluted shore to see a pure flourishing bay.

Conclusively, King Island was an unforgettable experience which challenged our capabilities and gave us the opportunity to create everlasting friendships built on laugher and joy. The moments we shared together will live on in our hearts and will always be significant. Our Adventurous Journey is one which has shaped our lives forever and will be the spark to strive for success in the future.
