The Governor and the Goldies

We celebrate the achievements of our Gold Awardees

Duke of Ed for me was a journey, and simultaneously a test of my self-determination and my integrity. At my ripe old age of 18 I can say that the Award has allowed me really to find myself, my values, my ambitions, and a confidence to know that I can do absolutely anything in this life, if I work hard enough. What other program can offer you more than that? For such an opportunity I can only be grateful, and I hope that your journey has been just as moving and as rewarding as mine. Congratulations to all our 2011 Gold Awardees!

On Friday 9th December 2011, Awards Victoria celebrated the achievements of 60 inspiring young people. Over many years, these individuals have thrown themselves headfirst into the unknown, taking on new challenges, developing as people and giving back to their communities.

The Ceremony took place in the beautiful Ballroom at Government House, with Awards presented by The Honourable Dr Alex Chernov, AO, QC, Governor of Victoria. As each Awardee was announced, we heard a citation of their activities and achievements, ranging from adventuring in Thailand, Borneo and Walhalla, to becoming a jillaroo, volunteering with the elderly and umpiring community football games.

The young people that were presented with their Gold Duke of Edinburgh's Award came from over 30 different schools and organisations across the state. Collectively they've contributed more than 3,200 hours of community service; this is the equivalent of almost four and a half months of continuous, non-stop round-the-clock volunteering.

Awards Victoria would like to extend a huge thank you to all involved with The Gold Award Ceremony.

Most of all, we'd like to honour the amazing efforts of all the Awardees and the Coordinators, Assessors, and families that supported them on the journey!
